USAA is offering mobile banking to customers that have Google’s Android-powered smart phones.

USAA launched its Deposit@Mobile application for the Apple iPhone last year. Since then, USAA customers have deposited more than $300 million worth of deposits using their iPhones.

Now that the Deposit@Mobile application is available on Android-powered smart phones, more USAA bank customers can deposit checks using their mobile phones.

Of USAA’s 7.3 million members, more than 1.2 million of them are using mobile applications to conduct bank business. This represents an acceptance rate of 16 percent, which is a leading rate in the industry.

Through this technology, customers deposit checks into their accounts simply by snapping an image of the front and bank of an endorsed check using their phones.

“The popularity of USAA’s mobile platform clearly demonstrates that USAA members are comfortable using this technology and welcome the convenience it offers,” says Jeff Dennes, USAA’s executive director of mobile technology. “With this expansion to Android-supported mobile phones, going to the bank to deposit a check soon may be as antiquated as black-and-white TVs.”

USAA is also working to develop a person-to-person application that will allow banking customers to transfer money to others through their mobile device. USAA is developing this mobile strategy and related technology using USAA’s in-house research and development team at its lab in San Antonio.

“Our members work with some of the most sophisticated technology in the world as part of their military jobs,” says USAA’s CEO, retired Army Maj. Gen. Joe Robles. “So it’s no surprise that they are embracing our mobile services to help manage their personal financial needs.”

Android is a software company owned by Mountain View, Calif.-based Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG). San Antonio-based USAA markets insurance, banking, investment and retirement products for members of the U.S. military. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) is a Cupertino, Calif.-based software and computing technology company.
